What grit sandpaper is best for prepping a wood table for painting?

I have a kitchen table that I want to paint because I am moving and I don't have enough $$ to buy new so I fig. I'd make other table "look" new buy painting it. If you have any tips and advice I would appreciate it. But I know you must sand first so again what grit is best I am hand sanding it?
