How can you be cynical of others, but still get along happily with others?

When I think about how people tend to be out for themselves and how many will play games, it's hard for me not to have a chip on my shoulder or to allow myself to allow myself to be compionate and helpful. (And I know I can be that way) I hate conflict and I want to be happy with others. But it's so easy to be disappointed with it all.
