These can be any number of things, many technologies promote dynamic web technologies,, depending on what u want to do ,, u can use an application server like tomcat or websphere to sit an application in a container accesible to the web,, that application may be something simple like a chat, or something compleX like a portal to a desktop ,,, in any event u can create, purchase, or download all types of portable modules created in different technologies to accomplish this, usually some sort of java is embedded to enable creative applications like this,, java runs in a virtual machine so it's virtually cross platform with the pretense that u have Java runtime installed, which happends to be on most peoples pcs either installed thru m browsing point and click style or possibly preinstalled by the OEM,, however if u didn't have the java, active X or whatever loaded in ur browser u would have been prompted to download.. =)
